Abstract
A mathematical model of oil droplet mixing by breaking waves is presented. The model uses a kinetic approach to describe vertical exchange of droplets at the interface between the slick and the water column. A mass balance of oil between the slick and the mixing layer of the water column is developed to satisfy general mass conservation principles and specific empirical data, thus increasing the potential for the model application to a wider range of oil and environmental parameters. The majority of coefficients and parameters in the model are conveniently combined into a single "mixing factor". Sensitivity analysis shows adequate reaction of the model on variation of input parameters. The model permits a rapid estimate of the amount of dispersed oil under breaking waves.
