Publication Sound perfume: Building positive impression during face-to-face communication(2012) Choi, Y.; Parsani, R.; Roman, X.; Pandey, A.V.; Cheok, A.D.; INTERACTIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA INSTITUTEA social psychologist Fritz Heider [Heider 1946] argued that liking or disliking a person depends on how the person is positively or negatively linked to other liked or disliked entities. Therefore, having the ability to express a lasting impression on others could play an important role in interpersonal relationships. Sound and smell can unconsciously help in creating a mental image of another person's personality during a face-to-face encounter, and each unique sound and smell aid in the memory of one another. We designed Sound Perfume as a wearable communication media to explore the idea of helping people manage the formation of their impression by others during a faceto- face interpersonal conversation. This could lead to more positive interactions using memorable auditory and olfactory experiences. This system helps people express their unique identity (ID) and personality to others using sound and fragrance markers through indirect stimulation. This concept is similar to the function of pheromones which are chemicals produced by some animals that triggers a social response in members of the same species. "Food Media" is an exploration of appropriating food and food activities as a medium for family communication and entertainment, across generations and over a distance. Traditionally, food has always been a social hub which brings people together for communication and entertainment. As the chances for remote families to enjoy shared entertainment are decreasing greatly nowadays, we propose "Food Media" as an intuitive multimodal interaction platform to engage remote people into social communication and entertainment within the telepresent family dinner context. Rather than fancy multimedia or computerized social games, this system breathes interactive entertainment into domestic routine activities of family dining, introduces multi-sensory interactions like touch, smell and taste to support enriched experience of interaction, connects and entertains people over a natural and playful eating experience. Sound Perfume system was evaluated through testing with twelve Japanese participants (six males, six females) to measure the effectiveness of augmenting their impressions in face-to-face interpersonal interactions. Results showed that Sound Perfume system could help eight users, especially during the first contact, to augment their impressions to their partner during communication. However, in order to assert this result concretely, we would need to improve the current version of the system and conduct further user evaluations. © 2011 IEEE.Publication Light perfume: A fashion accessory for synchronization of nonverbal communication(2013-10) Choi, Y.; Parsani, R.; Roman, X.; Pandey, A.V.; Cheok, A.D.; INTERACTIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA INSTITUTEPeople mirror each other's body language as a way of bonding, seeking acceptance and creating rapport. Light Perfume is an interactive wearable system designed in the shape of a bangle that helps the wearer mirror their partner through lighting and olfactory cues. During a conversation, the Light Perfume system on each person's wrist uses multiple inputs from the surrounding environment to generate a synchronized output expression. This consists of a color and blinking frequency of light along with a perfume fragrance that is stimulated simultaneously from each system. The Light Perfume system was designed to foster social interactions and make people feel more empathy towards each other. © 2013 ISAST.Publication CoDine: An interactive multi-sensory system for remote dining(2011) Wei, J.; Wang, X.; Peiris, R.L.; Choi, Y.; Martinez, X.R.; Tache, R.; Koh, J.T.K.V.; Halupka, V.; Cheok, A.D.; INTERACTIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA INSTITUTE; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERINGThe pervasiveness of computing has extended into domestic realms, including the dining room. Beyond simply a place to consume food, the dining room is a social hub where family members meet and share experiences. Yet busy lifestyles can make it difficult to spend social time with your family. To provide a new solution for family bonding, this paper presents the CoDine system, a dining table embedded with interactive subsystems that augment and transport the experience of communal family dining to create a sense of coexistence among remote family members. CoDine connects people in different locations through shared dining activities: gesture-based screen interaction, mutual food serving, ambient pictures on an animated tablecloth, and the transportation of edible messages. Rather than focusing on functionality or efficiency, CoDine aims to provide people with an engaging interactive dining experience through enriched multi-sensory communication. © 2011 ACM.
