Fabrication and characterization of optical waveguides in Potassium Lithium Niobate (KLN) substrates
(1999) Hu, P.F.; Chong, T.C.; Shi, L.P.; Xu, X.W.; Li, L.; Xu, B.X.; ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
Ferroelectric potassium lithium niobate (KLN) single crystals were grown using the TSSG method. The properties of these waveguides were determined by using the m-line technique. Using the IWKB method, the typical index profiles was approximately constructed as an exponential decay function.

Thermal modeling of phase change optical recording disk
    (1998) Shi, L.P.; Chong, T.C.; Ho, J.J.; Liu, Z.J.; Xu, B.X.; Miao, X.S.; Huang, Y.M.; Tan, P.K.; Lim, K.G.; ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
A new thermal model to study the laser induced temperature profile of a multilayered phase change optical recording disk is proposed. The new model considers the thermal effect generated by both the transmission and reflection light. The calculation formulae are listed. The model is used to simulate the Ge2Sb2Te5 phase change optical disks with five layers structure. In order to study the differences between the new and existing models, simulations are carried out using both models and the differences are compared. The differences get larger as the phase change layer becomes thinner. It is also revealed that the differences get larger as the wavelength becomes shorter. The idea proposed in this paper is also suitable for the analysis of magneto-optical disks as well as for improved accuracy in the measurement of thermal parameters.

Tolerance analysis of near-field optical recording system
(1998) Baoxi, X.; Chong, C.T.; Minyu, L.; Boopathi, V.; Gaoqiang, Y.; ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
The tolerances of Supersphere Solid Immersion Lens(SSIL) system in aberration were analyzed. The maximum deviation between objective lens and SSIL was given in several different optical parameters. The optical coupling efficiency of the SSIL to the air space were also calculated in these cases.

Oscillation threshold of pulsed doubly resonating optical parametric oscillator operating near degeneracy
(1997-07-01) Phua, P.B.; Xu, B.X.; Chong, T.C.; Fong, Y.C.; ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
This paper presents a time dependent theoretical model for predicting the oscillation threshold of a pulsed doubly resonating (DRO) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating near degeneracy. Besides proposing a numerical approach, simplified expressions for the oscillation threshold are also derived for both single pass and double pass pumped versions.

Numerical investigation of thermal problems in HAMR system
    (2009) Zhang, Q.D.; Xu, B.X.; Zhang, J.; Liu, N.Y.; Chin, G.L.; Sundaravadivelu, K.; Ong, E.H.; Li, D.Y.; MECHANICAL ENGINEERING; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
The paper numerically investigated two thermal related problems in heat assisted magnetic recording: the dependence of the recorded mark width on the laser power and the temperature distribution and changes with time in lubricant layer at the condition without or with the heat sink layer. The results show that the mark width increases as the laser power increases and heat sink layer helps to reduce temperature in lubricant layer.

Electrical transport across metal/two-dimensional carbon junctions: Edge versus side contacts
    (2012) Wu, Y.; Wang, Y.; Wang, J.; Zhou, M.; Zhang, A.; Zhang, C.; Yang, Y.; Hua, Y.; Xu, B.; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING; PHYSICS; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
Metal/two-dimensional carbon junctions are characterized by using a nanoprobe in an ultrahigh vacuum environment. Significant differences were found in bias voltage (V) dependence of differential conductance (dI/dV) between edge- and side-contact; the former exhibits a clear linear relationship (i.e., dI/dV αV), whereas the latter is characterized by a nonlinear dependence, dI/dV αV3/2. Theoretical calculations confirm the experimental results, which are due to the robust two-dimensional nature of the carbon materials under study. Our work demonstrates the importance of contact geometry in graphene-based electronic devices.© Copyright 2012 Author(s).

Thermal analysis of packaging device with metal-coated fiber bragg grating
    (2004) Xu, B.; He, W.; Ng, L.; Liu, M.; Yuan, G.; Yuan, H.; An, C.; Chong, T.; ELECTRICAL & COMPUTER ENGINEERING; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
The three-dimensional model of the packaging device is established based on ANSYS simulation platform. The thermal properties such as time response, axial and radial temperature distributions at different applied voltages are exhibited. With aids of Real Time Optical Spectrum Analyzing System and IR Camera System, time response of the device and axial temperature distribution along the coated fiber with intracore FBG are both demonstrated. Temperature responses to different applied voltages are achieved after measuring voltage induced wavelength shift and temperature dependent wavelength shift. Simulation shows results in agreement with those of experiment. Finally, regulations on length of the metal coating, size of the package, power consumption and tuning properties of the packaging device are discussed. Packaging device, fiber Bragg grating (FBG), temperature distribution, time response.

YAG laser end and side pumped by a laser diode
(1998) Yuan, G.; Chong, T.C.; Xu, B.; ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING; DATA STORAGE INSTITUTE
A combined end and side pump approach for a YAG laser pumped by a laser diode is proposed. The theoretical analysis of the total pump efficiency of the end and side pump module is presented. A laser-diode-pumped YAG laser is successfully demonstrated by use of this pump configuration. The experimental pump threshold is 81.2 mJ, the maximum output is 4.4 mJ, and the optical efficiency is approximately 3.1% for Q-switched operation of the YAG laser. © 1998 Optical Society of America.
