Issue Date: | Apr-1993 | Citation: | Lu, G. (1993-04). Advances in digital image compression techniques. Computer Communications 16 (4) : 202-214. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Interest in the development of multimedia systems which can handle digital voice and video as well as text and graphics is growing. Due to the fact that a large amount of data is required to represent digital images, data compression is necessary. This paper explains how image data can be compressed, and presents a review of image compression techniques. Some techniques are more mature, such as predictive coding, some are relatively new, such as sub-band coding and model-based coding. Currently proposed international standards on image compression techniques are then described. Finally, applications and future directions of image compression techniques are discussed in view of the development of multimedia systems. © 1993. | Source Title: | Computer Communications | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/99620 | ISSN: | 01403664 |
