Abstract: The ISO Directory is a fully distributed system for information storage and retrieval of a global OSI network. Owing to its complexity, the design and development of the Directory is generally laborious and the resultant software system is largely difficult to maintain. This paper presents an alternative approach, an object-oriented approach, to designing the Directory, which is able to minimize such shortcomings. The design is highly modular, based on object-oriented design techniques and incorporating object-oriented features of the Directory specifications which are given in the Abstract Service Definition Convention.
