Abstract: The relative stability of relaxed icosahedral and cubotahedral lead clusters has been determined by computing their binding energies, using an empirical many-body Hamiltonian fitted on bulk and surface properties of Pb. Face-centered structures are found to be favoured over icosahedral structure for all cluster sizes. We present a qualitative explanation of this somewhat unexpected result, connected with the low surface energy anisotropy and the large tensile surface stress on Pb surfaces. © 1992.
