Abstract: Nonlinear absorption and self-defocusing in GaP induced by photo-excited free carriers have been measured with a nanosecond Z-scan technique. The changes in the absorption coefficient and the refractive index due to the generation of an electron-hole pair are determined to be of the order of 10-19 cm2 and 10-22 cm3, respectively.
