Abstract: The local and nonlocal contents of nonlocal probability distributions are studied using the approach of Elitzur, Popescu, and Rohrlich. This work focuses on distributions that can be obtained by single-copy von Neumann measurements on bipartite quantum systems. For pure two-qubit states | Ψ (θ) =cosθ | 00 +sinθ | 11 (with cosθ sinθ), the local content of the corresponding probability distribution is found to lie between 1-sin2θ and cos2θ. For the family | Ψ (γ) = (| 00 + | 11 +γ | 22 ) / 2+ γ2 of two-qutrit states, nonzero local content is found for γ>2. © 2008 The American Physical Society.
