Abstract: The diphosphazene (CF3)2P=N=PPh3 L prepared from the reaction of (CF3)2PN3 with PPh3 has been shown from a single-crystal X-ray structural study to possess an unusual and novel delocalised P=N=P moiety containing PIV and PV atoms; the P=N=P structure is retained upon coordination to Fe in the complexes [Fe(CO)4{(CF3)2P=N=PPh 3}] 1 and [Fe(CO)3{(CF3)2P=N= PPh3}2] 2.
