Abstract: Shiny dark-brown crystals of [Nb(edta)(H2O)2] · 2H2O were obtained by reaction of an aqueous solution of Na2H2edta with a zinc-reduced, concentrated hydrochloric acid-ethanol solution of niobium pentachloride, followed by neutralization with 4 M NaOH to pH ∼ 1.5. The structure of the title complex, as determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, revealed a hexadentate edta4- ligand and two water molecules coordinated to the Nb atom in an approximately square-antiprism geometry. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, with Z = 4, α = 11.373(4), b = 11.418(5), c = 12.117 (4) Å, β = 103.37(3)°, V = 1530.8(9) Å3, Mr = 453.18, Dcalc = 1.966 g cm-3, R = 0.0247 and Rw = 0.0496 for 2156 observed reflections with I > 1.50σ(I). © 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
