Abstract: A thermodynamic model describing the formation of in-situ TiB2 reinforced Al metal matrix composite (MMC) has been established. Based on thermodynamic principles, the Gibbs free energies of formation of TiB2, AlB2, and Al3Ti were evaluated. Experimental investigation was carried out to verify the validity of the thermodynamic model. KBF4 and K2TiF6 were used to synthesize in-situ particulates in molten Al at different temperatures. X-ray diffraction was employed to characterize the formation of different phases in the composite. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
