Abstract: Scheduling of crude oil unloading and processing is a complex nonlinear problem, when tanks hold crude mixes. We present an improved discrete-time formulation and a novel solution approach for a multi-CDU refinery receiving crude from multi-parcel VLCCs through a high-volume, Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) pipeline. Mimicking a continuous-time formulation, our model allows transfers to start inside of some time slots. Furthermore, it handles most real-life operational features and improves on other reported models. Our solution algorithm corrects for the concentration discrepancy arising due to crude mixing in tanks by solving a series of successively smaller MILPs without solving any NLP or MINLP. We illustrate our approach using a refinery with 3 CDUs, 8 crudes, 8 tanks, 2 crude categories, and one 3-parcel VLCC arriving in an 80 h horizon. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
