The electrochemical properties of polypyrrole-bromine (PPY-Br2) and polypyrrole-iodine (PPY-I2) complexes obtained from the halogens induced chemical polymerization and oxidation of pyrrole were studied. Cyclic voltammetry was carried out on powder samples using a specially modified electrode. The effect of addition of graphite powder on the redox characteristics of the polymer electrode was also investigated. Electrochemical characterization was carried out in both aqueous inorganic halide and organic halide-acetonitrile solutions. Well defined oxidation and reduction waves were observed in all cases. The electrolytes used and the synthesis conditions were found to have significant effects on the voltammogram of the complexes. Both complexes exhibit good stability upon repeated cycling in both aqueous and organic electrolytes. © 1988.
