|Abstract:||Statistical monitoring of nonconforming or defective rates in a manufacturing process is commonly carried out in industry via Shewhart control charts and process capability indices. This paper points out a number of problematic applications of statistical process control charts found in practice, and highlights the need for alternative techniques for process control and capability study for processes that have attained a performance at the parts-per-million level as a result of advances in technology and automation. © 1994.|
