Abstract: In this paper we investigate the effect of error propagation by reconstructing the full property matrix of [001]-poled Pb(Zn 1/3Nb2/3)O3-(6-7)%PbTiO3 single crystal of [110] length cut by direct measurement of s12 E elastic constant instead of deducing it from the expression which is a function of s11 E, s13 E, s33 E, and c33 E. Here, s12 E is obtained directly from strain gauge measurements and only expressions which are less likely to incur propagation errors are used. The efficacy of proposed expression of s13 E is critically analyzed by error analysis. A more practical average value for d31 is also used. The refined property matrix is thus more accurate for use in the modeling of the performance of piezoelectric devices using the said crystal cut. © 2009 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
