Abstract: The influences of La and Ru codopants on the microstructure, nanoscale ferroelectric domain structure, and macroscopic ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties of polycrystalline BiFeO3 (BFO) films have been studied systematically. Microstructure studies indicate that the films have a pure and polycrystalline phase with phase transition from rhombohedral to monoclinic structure due to the simultaneous introduction of La and Ru ions. The ferroelectric domain structure and domain wall number of the BFO film are remarkably modified by the codoping effect. The macroscopic electrical and magnetic properties were improved because of the varied nanoscale domain structure and defect chemistry atmosphere caused by La and Ru ions. © 2011 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
