Abstract: In the present study, AZ31B magnesium alloy is developed through addition of copper and alumina particulates using a solidification processing route. The simultaneous addition of copper and nano-Al2O3 particulates led to an improvement in microstructural characteristics (reduced interparticle spacing), dimensional stability, hardness and overall tensile response of AZ31B. The results of this study clearly indicate the capability of AZ31B-Cu-Al2O3 system to serve a much wider array of engineering applications when compared to AZ31B. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
