A key functional role of the hippocampus is the formation of associative memories. Sequential memory, which is a form of hetero-associative memory, is inherent to human intelligence and commonly used in daily task such as typing and driving. Due to its numerous strong recurrent connections, the hippocampus CA3 region has been hypothesized to play a crucial role in the formation of sequential memory. In this paper, we demonstrate a dual network model of the hippocampus CA3 region to realize the storage and retrieval of sequential memory. The CA3 model is implemented using bio-realistic spiking neural networks based on the spike response neuron model. Detailed processes of storage, learning, synaptic modification and retrieval of sequential memory are demonstrated in simulations. © 2013 IEEE.
