Abstract: An analysis is presented of the jitter performance of bandpass filters used for timing recovery in digital repeaters. The effect of noise in the communication channel on the timing slips has been taken into account. It is shown that if the Q factor of the bandpass filter is too large, excessive signal distortion will occur, resulting in poor jitter tolerance. However, if the Q factor is too small, the effect of noise will be significant, again giving rise to poor performance. From the results presented, a guideline on the design of the Q factor has been obtained.
