Abstract: The author considers data transmission using linear suppressed-carrier modulations over the Gaussian channel with a random complex gain. The channel model applies in practice to the random phase channel and the nonselective Rayleigh fading channel. The author derives the minimum-error-probability receiver, and shows that the receiver is in general nonimplementable. The receiver has a detector estimator structure, and it is the computational burden of the estimator which renders the receiver nonimplementable. A suboptimal decision-feedback implementation is suggested, and the results are specialized to the random-phase channel and the Rayleigh fading channel.
