Abstract: This paper reports results of experimental investigations on the relationship between skew angle and achievable recording density. Work to be presented here is focused on bit density, track density and error rate aspects. Obtained results indicate that large skew angle will reduce achievable bit density of both near-isotropic and orientated media. Increased skew angle will also increase bit-shift value, therefore, reduce applicable recording density from reliability viewpoint. However, increased skew angle can support higher track density, as the effective track width and the writing interference are reduced when skew angle is large. For certain head-disk integration, the width of erase profile can reduce at a faster rate, comparing with the width of track profile. © 1996 IEEE.
