dc.description.abstract | Cellulose esters including cellulose triacetate and numerous proprietary cellulose acetate propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate were studied as the materials for membranes for forward osmosis (FO). The fundamental engineering and science of cellulose ester membrane formation were explored. Fundamental properties of various cellulose esters, namely the transport properties including salt and water partition coefficients, permeability and diffusivity and also the free volume properties of various cellulose esters were evaluated in this study. Lastly, a hydrophilic cellulose ester with a high intrinsic water permeability and a water partition coefficient was chosen from the wide range of cellulose esters to construct highly porous membrane supports for flat-sheet thin film composite FO (TFC-FO) membranes. The performance of TFC-FO membranes prepared from the hydrophilic cellulose ester containing a high degree of OH clearly surpasses those prepared from cellulose esters with moderate hydrophilicity. The cellulose esters showed a great potential as materials for membranes for osmotic processes due to their excellent water transport properties. | |
