Abstract: MY DISSERTATION DISCUSSES HOW YENAN IS CONSTRUCTED IN CULTURAL PRACTICES DURING 1936-1945.BY BORROWING STRUCTURE OF FEELING FROM RAYMOND WILLIAMS, I REGARD REVOLUTION AS A PROCESS CONTAINING HISTORICAL DIVERSITY AND CONTINUITY AS I DEFINE AS THE OPEN REVOLUTION. DIFFERENT FROM PREVIOUS STUDIES DISCUSSING YENAN AS A NATURAL AND SELF-CONTAINED CONCEPT, I HISTORICIZE YENAN IN AN OPEN AND CORRELATED SOCIAL CONTEXT AND THE TRADITION OF LITERATURE, AND EXAMINE NATIONWIDE WRITINGS AND PUBLISHING ON YENAN. I ARGUE THAT YENAN IS A HISTORICAL PROCESS IN WHICH THE PAST AND EMERGENT INTERACT. THE CCP?S REVOLUTION CATERED TO THE IMAGINATIONS AND EXPERIENCES OF DIVERSE SUBJECTS, INCLUDING FOREIGN JOURNALISTS, COMMUNIST WRITERS, PUBLISHING INSTITUTIONS AND POETS. THEIR SUBJECTIVITIES, AS WELL AS THE POWER OF IDEAS, SUCH AS CADRE AND NEW SOCIETY, PLAYED IMPORTANT ROLES IN THEIR INTERACTION WITH YENAN.
