Abstract: This dissertation comprises three essays on the outcomes of various sustainability initiatives related to green IT and sustainable operations, and the relationship among the dimensions of sustainability. In the first essay, I utilize signaling theory and event study methodology to understand the short-term business value in terms of market returns of green IT announcements. In the second essay, by grounding the discussion in the resource consumption perspective, I disaggregate the environmental performance into emissions classified according to the ownership of their sources and examine their relationships with cost efficiency and productivity in organizations. In the third essay, I examine whether social and environmental sustainability encompass conflicting objectives. Taken together, the dissertation as a whole offers a broader perspective with insights drawn from secondary data, and the three essays advance our understanding of the business value of sustainability as well as the relationships among its different dimensions.
