dc.description.abstract	This dissertation is a study of the social and cultural history of tuberculosis in China from the 1850s to the 1940s. It examines how the knowledge of disease, medical culture and patient?s and the public?s experience of tuberculosis changed when Western medicine encountered Chinese society. Focusing on these issues, this dissertation also explores the relationship between tuberculosis and the Chinese experience of ?hybrid hygienic modernity.?
