Abstract: The performance of a solar cell is influenced by its temperature. Increased solar cell temperature reduces its performance. Green roof was therefore proposed as the sub-layer for PV modules mounted on roof tops. The objectives of this study were to examine the cooling effect of green roof on PV modules and to develop a mathematical model for PV module temperature and evapotranspiration rate in an integrated PV system and green roof in the tropics. The step of the study: (1) study the energy balance mechanism between PV modules and green roof, (2) numerical model development for evapotranspiration rate and the PV module temperature influenced by the evapotranspiration, (3) validation through field measurement. This study has confirmed that the evapotranspiration reduces the PV module temperature over the green roof and subsequently improves its performance. The prediction model developed under the Energy Balance principle is in agreement with the experimental results.
