Abstract: An integrated framework for discussing thermodynamics from the microscopic point of view is presented. This nontraditional approach is logical because it starts from elementary, particle concepts and shows how it leads to specific processes at bulk level. As such, the second law of thermodynamics is expressed by using only microscopic descriptors. This paper aims to help physical chemistry students establish a conceptual framework for their study of thermodynamics and enhance their understanding of the topic.
