Abstract: Cybernetic instruments combine real-time control with decision-making and interpretative capabilities. The implementation of a cybernetic instrument based on a knowledge-based system is described. A novel feature of the design is the integration of deterministic control with nondeterministic inference for the actual control of a process or experiment. Use is made of a frame representation scheme to link procedural and declarative knowledge. An application to pH control is discussed. © 1988 American Chemical Society.
