The paper traces the investigative work carried out by the Corporation into the corrosion mechanisms acting on buried structures in Singapore soil conditions. Particular reference is made to the problem of aerobic and anaerobic bacterial action in tropical soils and the need for early testing of samples where such action is suspected. The applicability of design code classification systems to various types ofstructure is reviewed with particular reference to the problems of thin sections, sections subjected to a hydrostatic pressure on one side only, sections subject to alternate wetting and drying, and sections partially immersed. The potential for accelerated corrosion in these conditions is discussed. The various protective measures adopted by the Corporation in its attempts to ensure the long durability of its structures are described. © 1987.
