Abstract: A study on the Taylor vortices formed in a mineral oil between a rotating inner cylinder and a stationary outer cylinder was carried out. The transition to wavy vortex flow occurred at a very high Reynolds number than in an infinitely long column, while an asymmetric feature was observed in the widths of the inflow and outflow regions. The calculation results from Fluent simulation matched well with the experimental observations. The boundaries at the top and the bottom could significantly affect the vortex formation in the annulus. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the AIChE Annual Meeting and Fall Showcase (Cincinnati, OH 10/30/2005-11/4/2005).
