Abstract: This paper describes the ultimate strength analysis of an offshore tubular joint whose partial failure in Hurricane Katrina was investigated to provide an order-of-magnitude calibration for full-scale wave-in-deck loads. Methods of connection analysis included a rigid-plastic limit analysis and three levels of nonlinear finite element analysis. Progressive tearing of a minimum fillet weld at the faying surface significantly reduced the ultimate strength. A simple T×T mid-plane finite element model, with special phenomenological elements describing the weld behavior, showed a promising combination of accuracy and efficiency.
