Abstract: Concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) are usually used as the primary columns in high-rise construction. The steel tubes support the construction load and the weight of concrete slab and steel frame, and they are used as permanent formwork for infilling concrete. Due to the construction procedure, the steel tubes are usually preloaded by construction loads and the weight of the upper structures. The preload produces initial stress and deformation in the steel tube and will affect the stiffness and strength of the composite column. In this paper, a modified Eurocode approach is proposed to evaluate the preload effect on the axial resistance of CFST. The proposed approach is verified by experimental results and finite element analysis results. It is showed that the proposed method could give good estimation of the preload effect on the capacities of CFST. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group.
