Abstract: Pontoon-type very large floating structures (VLFS) are giant plates resting on the sea surface. As these structures have a large surface area and a relatively small depth, they behave elastically under wave action. This type of fluid-structure interaction has being termed hydroelasticity. Hydroelastic analysis is thus necessary to be carried out for VLFS designs in order to assess the dynamic motion and stresses due to wave action. This paper presents the mathematical formulation for the hydroelastic analysis of VLFS. Hydroelastic responses and mitigation methods in reducing the structural response are discussed using some example problems. © 2011 Springer.
