|Abstract:||The use of genetic algorithms to estimate system parameters in a differential equation model of ship motions based on free-decay data is described. Sensitivity and convergence studies are first carried out for a simple roll model with nonlinear damping. Comparisons are then made with the results obtained by other parameter estimation methods for an experimentally measured decay curve. An example of nonlinearly coupled roll-heave model involving 12 parameters and one initial condition is also investigated to study the versatility of the genetic algorithm approach to parameter estimation.|
