dc.description.abstract | A series of miniature piezocone tests was performed in sand overlying normally consolidated (NC) clay to evaluate the strength profile of the layered soil. All tests were performed at 100 g in the centrifuge. For different thicknesses of the overlying sand, the measured cone resistance is noted to vary significantly. This finding highlights the significance of the extent of the cone influence zone to the measured strength of the layered soil. Hence, the extent of the influence zone behind and ahead the penetrating cone in the upper sand and the lower clay is thoroughly examined. Discussions on the transition zones in the cone resistance and pore pressure profiles are also elaborated while the piezocone penetrates the sand/clay interface. The knowledge of the cone influence and transition zone is valuable in deriving the reliable soil strength profile of the layered soil. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group, London. | |
