Abstract: The study highlights the effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcement on physical, thermal and mechanical characteristics of a lead free solder (SnAgCu) and lightweight magnesium (Mg). The composites were fabricated using powder metallurgy technique followed by extrusion. Thermo-mechanical property results revealed an increase in thermal stability with increasing amount of CNTs in both SnAgCu and Mg composites. Mechanical property characterizations revealed enhanced overall strength for both systems. For Mg-CNT composites, ductility and work of fracture were also observed to improve with increasing addition of CNTs. For SnAgCu-CNT composites, creep tests performed on solder joint samples showed better creep resistance with increasing addition of CNTs. An attempt is made in this study to correlate properties of the resultant nanocomposites with increasing presence of CNTs. © 2008 MS&T'08®.
