|Abstract:||A thin layer of UHMWPE or UHMWPE+PFPE was coated onto cylindrical aluminum pin surface to provide wear resistant coating on this soft and tribologically poor metal. The coefficient of friction and wear life of the coated samples were studied on a pin-on-disk tribometer under different normal loads and two sliding speeds against uncoated Al disk as the counterface. Both coatings provided coefficient of friction values in the range of 0.02-0.2 as compared to 0.4-1 for uncoated Al. There was tremendous improvement in the wear life of the pin, with UHMWPE+PFPE film giving wear life 2-3 times higher than that with only UHMWPE film. The wear life was defined as the point at which the coefficient of friction increases from lower steady state value to a very high value in the range of 0.4-1 accompanied by severe fluctuations in the value. By this definition, bare Al pin had zero wear life as the coefficient of friction was high and fluctuating from the very start of sliding. A thin polymer film was transferred to the disk surface during sliding against coated pins providing very long-term wear life despite minor visual removal of the film from the pin surface. Thus, UHMWPE film was very adherent to the metal surface providing wear resistance. PFPE helped in further lowering of the coefficient of friction and thus reducing friction heating of the interface and higher wear life of the film. The present films will have applications in gears and bearings as solid or boundary lubricants for automotive and aerospace component.
