Abstract: Modeling random cloud data for the rapid prototyping of complex surface products is a hot research topic in recent years. Conventional approaches focus on creating an STL file from the cloud data directly or by reconstructing a surface model. These approaches are time-consuming and many expert modeling skills are usually required. In this paper, we propose an innovative modeling method to convert a point cloud into a layer-based RP model through an error-based segmentation process. Two segmentation schemes, i.e. uniform segmentation and adaptive segmentation are presented. The generated RP model can be served as a direct input to the RP machine for fabrication. In this process, neither a surface model nor an STL file is generated. Three case studies are presented to illustrate the efficacy of the approach. © Professional Engineering Publishing 2004.
