Abstract: Chatter performance in cylindrical grinding can be affected by many different factors. Some of these factors include the characteristics of the workpiece system and workpiece drive system, characteristics of the grinding wheel and the grinding wheel drive system and also the numerous process parameters. This paper describes an investigation into altering the torsional characteristics of the workpiece system. It also describes the instrumentation used to measure the dynamic torsional compliance of a rotating system under actual operating conditions.
