Abstract: A three-dimensional finite element model of a natural intervertebral disc was constructed and used for stress analysis. The annulus fibrosus was assumed to be a composite of collagenous fibers embedded in a matrix of ground substance. Studies showed that the model provided an accurate representation of the disc's mechanical behaviors under normal physiological conditions.
