Abstract: An analytical method for calculating error rates for a duobinary FM system with discriminator detection and Viterbi sequence estimation decoder is presented. Gaussian noise and intersymbol interference are assumed to be present in the channel. The method, which assumes high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and precoding of the binary input message, has been found to give accurate results, as evidenced by the close agreement between theory and measurement in a system implemented in hardware. The Viterbi decoding does not lead to an SNR improvement as the frequency deviation becomes large, for which the discriminator output noise becomes more impulsive.
