Traditionally, work in user experience focuses primarily on designers. However, in small and medium sized enterprises, software developers tend to take on a number of important roles, including designers, user experience engineers and analysts and so have influence over the user experience for end-users. We argue that in order to inform design and development to improve user experience for end-users, greater attention on software developers, especially in the HCI field, is vital. We believe pragmatic measures, in addition to user experience theories, frameworks, levels and guidelines are essential for aiding software developers. To this end, we propose the concept of software patterns of user experience and explain why it will serve the purpose. © 2010 Authors.
