Abstract: Analysis and design of stub-girders currently in use have been based on simplified beams or Vierendeel truss-girder idealisation. Some experimental results from full-scale tests appear to substantiate the validity of these approximate models for determining to some extent, the deflections and the collapse loads. In this paper, ten stub-girders which were tested earlier by other researchers are analysed using the finite element software package ABAQUS to study their structural response up to failure. Simple plane strain, plane stress and rod elements are used in the idealized two-dimensional finite element model. Typical stress distributions and cracking and yielding patterns at different load levels are presented. The proposed finite element model has been validated by the close agreement obtained between the computed and the experimental cracking and yielding patterns, ultimate strength values and load-deflection relationships. © 1994.
