Abstract: Ultimate strength tests on stiffened plates simply supported on all four edges and subjected to the combined action of axial and lateral loads are reported. A series of 10 stiffened plates having two different plate slenderness values were tested to failure under different combinations of axial and lateral loads. A description of test procedure is also presented. The test specimens were analysed by using the elasto-plastic finite element package to determine the behaviour and ultimate load capacity of stiffened panels and the comparison of these results with those obtained experimentally established the accuracy of the finite element modelling. In addition, stiffened plates tested by other researchers have been analysed to examine the behaviour of stiffened plates under combined loading. Copyright © 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
