Abstract: Concrete jacketing is a commonly used method to strengthen existing steel columns. Normally carried out whilst the steel column is without significant axial load, the effectiveness of this method of jacketing is recognized widely. However, the effectiveness of this method has yet to be proven if jacketing is carried out whilst the steel column is subjected to significant axial preload. Eight specimens were fabricated and tested to investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete jacketed steel columns, jacketed whilst under preload, taking into account the following parameters, viz. eccentricity, preload level and slenderness. The fiber element method is adopted to model the pin-ended concrete jacketed steel columns subjected to eccentric loads applied at both ends. The method entails discretizing each cross-section into small fibers and the fibers are then analysed through iterative computation using the appropriate material constitutive model. The effects of initial deformation and stresses under preload were taken into consideration. Results of the fiber element analysis and the Eurocode 4 method were compared with the experimental results obtained. © 2003 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
