Abstract: Current traffic simulation software cannot provide effective support for the modeling and evaluation intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The framework and implementation method to achieve this object is proposed using application programming interfaces (API) of microscopic traffic simulation software PARAMICS (PARAllel Microscopic Simulator). The plug-ins modeling ITS control and guidance strategies are developed using API functions of PARAMICS and are embedded into the core simulation module to implement the modeling of different ITS strategies. In the case study of the non-recurrent traffic congestion induced by an incident, several different ITS control and guidance strategies are simulated, evaluated and compared.
