Abstract: A study and concluding guidelines on how to minimize costs by optimizing complex distillation units, are presented. Distillation is the most common unit operation for separating homogeneous mixtures, which is based on differences in the volatility of components. A single feed stream is separated into two product streams in simple distillation columns. several industrially important complex distillation columns, with either multiple feeds or side-streams, are simulated using a commercial process simulator, HYSYS 3.2. An appropriate thermodynamic model must be selected for predicting the properties of the mixtures in using a simulator, such as HYSYS. Visual basic macros were developed to carry out the optimization, using these steps, such as selecting a total number of stages and the feed and draw stages, and transferring the selected values to HYSYS and initiate the rigorous simulation.
