dc.description.abstractThis paper examines the nature of decision-theory approach and its application to education. In particular, a case study on selection of tutoring policy for maximising students' learning at Singapore Polytechnic is discussed. On the one hand, students' ability, availability of resources, and lecturers' preparation time are uncertainties. On the other hand, decision is influenced by individual preference for tutorial formats such as student-centred, chalk-and-talk, or computer-based tutoring. Moreover, the course of action is dependent on trade-off in values. Using decision analysis, uncertainties, preferences, alternatives and values are modelled and a defensible claim on maximising student learning can be made.
