Abstract: In this paper the designs of feedback linearization and fuzzy logic controllers for speed control of variable reluctance (VR) motors are presented. The controllers so designed, which are based on nonlinear control techniques, are applied to a VR motor model (taking saturation into account) with the aim of improving dynamic performance as well as reducing torque and hence speed ripples. Test results obtained through digital simulations show improvements in torque and speed ripples over the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller. Finally, a hybrid controller is designed by using both feedback linearization and fuzzy tracking control algorithms. Simulation test results obtained from the hybrid controller show further improvements in reducing torque and speed ripples over the fuzzy as well as feedback linearization controllers. © 1996 Taylor & Francis Ltd.
