Abstract: The author describes the design and implementation of a low-cost electronic version of a dynamic model capable of simulating the excitation control system of large synchronous generators used in power systems. This system, designed for use with microalternators, consists of a time-constant regulator of a novel design, a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) chopper-driven exciter, and an automatic voltage regulator. The results of a wide range of tests, conducted on a 3 kva Mawdsley microalternator equipped with this system, are presented and discussed.
